Hey everyone, and welcome back to Caitlin’s Corner! This month I hope you are hungry for a new article, because I am going to provide a dish for you! I have been watching birds land on my birdfeeder and wondering how cool it would be to create a meal that mirrors a bird’s diet, but edible for you and me. So, I have compiled a list of different foods for you to try out (with parental permission and help)! Let’s take a look:

Drink:

1. Honey Lemonade: Some birds, such as hummingbirds, enjoy sugar water and nectar. I recommend making a sweet drink alternative: honey sweetened lemonade (nectar is sweet to the hummingbirds, and lemonade is sweet to us). Here are the ingredients and materials you will need:

a. 2 cups of water

b. 1/3 cup of honey

c. 1 cup of freshly squeezed lemon juice (usually takes 4-7 lemons based on size)

d. Pitcher

e. Pot

There are three easy steps:

1. Warm the water and honey in a pot on a low temperature. Stir until they are mixed together, and then remove them from the heater and let it cool.

2. Add the lemon juice to the mix in a pitcher.

3. Put the pitcher in the refrigerator to cool.

Appetizer:

2. Apples and Peanut Butter: I am not the biggest fan of peanut butter because of my allergy, but this is a healthy snack to try if you do not have peanut allergy. Birds often eat peanuts and fruits such as apples. To be like the birds, cut up an apple into little pieces and dip it into peanut butter.

Main Meal:

3. Corn: Birds such as sparrows and ducks often eat cracked corn, sometimes mixed with millet. You can cook yellow corn and then take it off of the cob to eat similar to these birds.

4. Pasta with Basil and Sunflower Seed Pesto: Sunflower seeds are popular to munch on in the bird world. To add a bit of sunflower seed to your diet, I recommend making this pesto to put onto pasta. Here is what you are going to need:

a. ¼ cup of olive oil

b. ¼ cup of sunflower seeds

c. Salt and pepper

d. ½ teaspoon of lemon

e. ½ teaspoon of garlic

f. 2 tablespoons of grated parmesan cheese

g. 2 tablespoons of dried basil

h. Cooked pasta

i. Pan

j. Blender

There are 3 easy steps:

1. Blend all the ingredients in a blender until it comes out smooth.

2. Pour the blend into a pan and put it on medium temperature for a few minutes until it is a little warm.

3. Poor it on cooked pasta a bowl and mix it up until the pesto is evenly distributed.

Dessert:

5. Cup of Dirt: I remember eating this when I was younger, and it is still good! You can eat gummy worms out of the dirt, just like some birds do! Collect the following ingredients and materials:

a. 1 box of JELL-O Chocolate Flavor Instant Pudding

b. 1 tub of COOL WHIP Whipped Topping

c. 2 cups of milk

d. 15 OREO Cookies (they should be crushed to 1-14 cups with a spoon)

e. 1 bag of gummy worms

f. Whisk

g. Spoon

h. Stirring spoon

i. 10 plastic cups

There are four easy steps:

1. Make the pudding by mixing the JELL-O pudding mix and milk with a whisk for two minutes, and then leave it to settle for 5.

2. Stir in the COOL WHIP with half of the OREO cookie crumbs.

3. Divide the pudding among 10 plastic cups

4. Put in the refrigerator so that they can get cold for an hour, and then add the gummy worms to the tops once you take them out

There are also other recipes on the right side of the page such as a cake version where I found this recipe: http://www.kraftrecipes.com/recipes/dirt-cups-57763.aspx.

I hope these recipes make you hungry for more! Enjoy making these with help, and more importantly, eating them! See you in next month on Caitlin’s Corner!
