Hello, and welcome back to Caitlin’s Corner! This month you are in for a treat because the topic is superheroes! Who doesn’t love superheroes? From comic books to movies to merchandise, they have been saving our lives from boredom. But what I like is that there are superheroes that are bird-like! So, here are some amazing superheroes:

1. Nighthawk: This superhero appears in comic books by Marvel. He has been around with different versions: Kyle Richmond with Marvel as his mainstream character who used to be a supervillian, and those where he is from alternate universes with Squadron Supreme. What is Richmond’s background story? Well, he has had it tough. He was sent to boarding school, had a friend named Mindy Williams that died, had his mother die, and later had his father die. All were due to accidents of some kind. He found his abilities with an alchemy serum, which helped him develop strength during night hours. From that, he is an amazing athlete. He also gets help—and extra cool looks—from built wings, claws, lasers, and other weapons.

2. Hawkman: Here is a DC Comics American fictional character. He works with Hawkwoman, or Hawkgirl, and takes on different versions. His first appearance was as Carter Hall, reincarnated from Khufu who was Egyptian royalty. Carter Hall was in Flash Comics in 1940. He found a “ninth metal” that allowed him to fly! Shhh…don’t tell, but he took weapons from his day job at the museum. He also appears as police officer Katar Hol, spy Fel Ander, new 1997 Hawkman Zauriel, and son and Golden Eagle Charley Parker. He uses this metal in his costume, with wings to help control where he flies. Different ages gave him different abilities. For instance, Gold Age allowed him to breathe underwater and communicate with birds and Silver Age allowed his senses to be like a hawk’s.

3. Falcon: I love how this character connects with birds! Falcon, Samuel Thomas Wilson, is a Marval Comic character and was introduced in the Captain America comics and is known as the first African-American superhero to be very popular. His backstory is that he was born in Harlem, New York City and trained pigeons from an early age because of his natural love for them. His parents were killed, his father trying to stop a fight and his mother by a mugger. He begins to go down an unsteady path when his plane crashes and he is stranded on Exile Island. But later he finds a loyal bird and friend, Redwing. The Red Skull group eventually gives him more powers with birds. For instance, he has a telepathic link with all birds, having the Cosmic Cube to thank for the mental connection between himself and Redwing to start with. He also has pretty sweet wings and boots.

4. Birds of Prey: Girl power! This female superhero group (with an exception with some of the reoccurring characters) is part of their own comic book series that DC publishes. Not all are bird superhero characters, but some are. Here are the four main characters and couple of reoccurring ones:
a. Oracle: Also known as Barbara Gordon, she is the leader. She used to be Batgirl but then changed into Oracle after the Joker made her paralyzed and in a wheel chair. Even though she isn’t a bird character, she has a pretty sweet hacking, programming, and memory skills.
b. Black Canary: Also known as Dinah Lance, this girl is amazing at fighting as a martial artist but is still a good-natured person. What I love about her is that she has this strategy where she sends out an ultrasonic “Canary Cry.”
c. Huntress: Also known as Helena Bertinelli, she is heavily trained in combat and fights mobs since one killed her family.
d. Lady Blackhawk: Also known as Zinda Blake, she is the one that handles weapons and is the pilot.
e. Nightwing: Also known as Dick Grayson and the first Robin, he is the love interest of Oracle.
f. Starling: Also known as Ev Crawford, she is a best friend to Black Canary with high spirits and guns.
g. Hawkgirl: Also known as Kendra Saunders, she helped Oracle, who gives her a car in return.
h. Dove: Also known as Dawn Granger, she is the one that stands for peace, as that is what doves symbolize, after all. She has high strength and quick actions
i. Hawk: Also known as Hank Hall, he is a symbol of war, opposite to Dove.
So, those are some really cool bird superheroes! There are many more, but I found these extra fun to feature on Caitlin’s Corner. Stay super!
